THE BEULAVILLE BAPTIST BOOK CLUB PRESENTS: A BUR-LESS-Q NUTCRACKER! (non-Equity)
By Mark-Brian Sonna
Directed by Charles Ballinger
Choreography by Mark-Brian Sonna & Jana Edele
About the show:
The Beulaville Baptist Book club is in dire straits financially so they hire the Beaumont Ballet to do the Nutcracker as a fundraiser. Unfortunately, they accidentally food poison the entire company and need a replacement cast. The Velvet Kittens burlesque troupe is on their way to New Orleans to do a show when their van breaks down in Beulaville. The women in the book club hire the dancers without knowing what burlesque is. The Nutcracker is performed to the original Tchaikovsky score but dance in the burlesque style! We have ruined the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy for thousands of people for the last 10 years. This show is winner of the National Goldstar Nutcracker Award (aka “The Nutty”) for being the most beloved Nutcrackers in the USA and been seen on Nightline. It has a massive cult following with audience members dressing up like the characters, calling out lines to the performers, and becoming part of the show by becoming the Beulaville Audience. Think of it as the Rocky Horror of the Christmas Season. The Burlesque dancing in the show is old fashioned meaning it is suggestive but there is no stripping, all the dancers stay covered up.
The show runs from November 24 through December 26, 2017 with a possible extension through December 29, 2016. There are no rehearsals or performances, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Rehearsal begin October 14. The show will be presented at the 300 seat Main Stage Theatre at the Addison Conference and Theatre Centre, 15650 Addison Road, Addison TX 75001.
Most of the cast is reprising their roles from previous years. We have a few slots available.
Ramona (F) 30 -50. Black. She is the token minority of the Beulaville Baptist Book Club, knows it, and reminds the club about it quite regularly as the book club members inadvertently insert foot into mouth as they try and show how progressive they are. She’s quite religious, but can be very open minded. She loves to sing gospels at the drop of a hat whenever she feels the spirit move her. She is full of energy, good natured, but does have a mischievous sense of humor.
Jojo (M): 20 to 40. Any race. This role is to be performed in Drag. He is a former dancer with the Bolshoi, but where he’s from originally no one can figure out. He is strident, opinionated and highly critical of America, but is in America to find a husband. He becomes Dickey’s love interest, though Dickey doesn’t realize Jojo is actually a man. This role requires dancing.
Jana (F): 20-40. Any race. The no nonsense artistic director of the Velvet Kittens. She is the only “sane” person in this entire cast and makes commentary about the all the kooky people she is dealing with. She is acerbic, at times sarcastic, and exceedingly funny as she tries unsuccessfully to keep her dancers in line. This role requires as much acting as dancing. This role requires dancing.
Jessica (F): 20 to 40. Any race. She’s one of the dancers. She is a morally upstanding Catholic “nice girl” who prays with a rosary till the music starts, then she becomes vampy, sexy, and the trashiest of them all. This role requires dancing.
Jill (F): 20’ to 40. Any race. Dumb, dumb dumb, dumb, and also sweet. She chews bubble gum while dancing. She also uses the f word in just about every sentence without even realizing she’s using it. She becomes Dickey’s love interest who is the token male member of the book club. This role requires dancing.
Jocelyn (F): 20 to 40. Any race. An absolute diva. She thinks she’s the best dancer and feels as though she never needs to rehearse and would rather spend the time perfecting her make-up and eyelashes. She sees her face as a blank canvas to try out different looks. During the show she “evolves” her make-up from simple day time to jaw dropping extreme. A Make-up stipend and a wardrobe of false eyelashes will be provided to the performer. This role requires dancing.
